For most homeowners the biggest expense they have, second only to their mortgage payment, is their utility bill. Every month when you walk out to get the mail you feel like you are on your way to the firing squad. Do not worry, there are easy things you can do to reduce energy consumption today.
One great thing you can do is to make it a family priority. Explain to your kids that simple things like turning off the lights when they leave a room, or putting their computer on energy saving mode, can go a long way to saving electricity.
They can also take shorter showers, and turn the water off when they brush their teeth. Here is a list of some other things you, and your family, can do to cut back on the amount of energy you use and save a lot on your utility bills:
1. Make sure your home is not an ‘energy hog’. Do not let all the nice warm air that you have paid to heat goes right out the window, literally.
Make sure your home has the proper insulation and that all windows and doors are in good repair. If they are damaged and leaking either repair or replace them. You might even be eligible for a tax credit.
2. Lower the temperature in your home, especially at night or when you are not home. Installing a programmable thermostat is a great way to do that.
3. Generate your own energy. People are really beginning to understand that this is a very feasible option. You can buy or build your own solar panels and wind turbines.
One small turbine will provide around 60% of your electricity needs and can be built in a few hours with parts from your local hardware store…all for about $200.
I hope these things have given you some ideas on how to reduce energy consumption and save money on your utility bills.
