Reduce Energy Consumption – 3 Simple Tips

For most homeowners the biggest expense they have, second only to their mortgage payment, is their utility bill. Every month when you walk out to get the mail you feel like you are on your way to the firing squad. Do not worry, there are easy things you can do to reduce energy consumption today.

One great thing you can do is to make it a family priority. Explain to your kids that simple things like turning off the lights when they leave a room, or putting their computer on energy saving mode, can go a long way to saving electricity.

They can also take shorter showers, and turn the water off when they brush their teeth. Here is a list of some other things you, and your family, can do to cut back on the amount of energy you use and save a lot on your utility bills:

1. Make sure your home is not an ‘energy hog’. Do not let all the nice warm air that you have paid to heat goes right out the window, literally.

Make sure your home has the proper insulation and that all windows and doors are in good repair. If they are damaged and leaking either repair or replace them. You might even be eligible for a tax credit.

2. Lower the temperature in your home, especially at night or when you are not home. Installing a programmable thermostat is a great way to do that.

3. Generate your own energy. People are really beginning to understand that this is a very feasible option. You can buy or build your own solar panels and wind turbines.

One small turbine will provide around 60% of your electricity needs and can be built in a few hours with parts from your local hardware store…all for about $200.

I hope these things have given you some ideas on how to reduce energy consumption and save money on your utility bills.

How to Roof Shingles – Three Time Saving Tips

If you’re looking for “how to roof shingles” information, you’ve come to the right place. It’s a tough job, but there’s no sense making it take longer than necessary. Here are three tips to speed things up.

How to Roof Shingles – Tip #1 Stand Up!

Some roofers shingle sitting down or kneeling, but they have to keep jumping up to change position, get more shingles, get more nails and dispose of wrappers. You can save a lot of time and energy by just standing while you shingle. It takes a couple weeks for your back muscles to adjust, but after that it is definitely easier and faster.

At the end of the day when you’re beat, you can always sit down and knock out a few more bundles.

How to Roof Shingles – Tip #2 Don’t Set Your Nail Gun Down!

Some speedy roofers set their nail gun down between every shingle, but frankly, I don’t know how they do it. I like to hang onto the gun between shingles. Using the gauge on the bottom of the nailer, you can position the shingle and nail it with no delay when you’re ready. You will save a little time on every shingle you install.

How to Roof Shingles – Tip #3 Grab Them Right!

Make it a point to grab the shingle in the exact spot you will be holding it for nailing. For me, since I’m right-handed, that would be the bottom left corner.

By grabbing it in the right spot, you can butt it right up against the adjacent shingle, while checking the bottom edge for alignment, all without any wasted motion.

These may seem like little things, but they can add up to a lot of time saved on your roofing project.

Of course there’s a lot more you need to know about “how to roof shingles”. To make the job easier help you and avoid big mistakes, go to: http://www.roofingsecrets.com

All About River Thames Charter Boat Tips

Chartering a boat trip on the Thames River can be a great way to enjoy a day or evening with your friends, family or co workers. There are a wide variety of boats that are available for charter, so you will have no trouble finding what you need. If you are going to be enjoying food or refreshments on your charter trip then there are a few things that you should bear in mind.

Remember that you are on a boat on a river and for this reason you and your guests may be better served with easy to consume cuisine such as sandwiches and drinks in disposable containers. You may not want to require everyone to sit down to eat when there is so much scenery and cool breeze to be enjoyed. Remember to discuss this issue in detail with the charter company, because they can give you some helpful suggestions.

If it is a smaller boat that you are going to be using such as a speed boat or smaller party barge then make sure that your contract stipulates exactly what type of boat and exactly how many people it will seat. This will avoid a situation where you pay for one boat and have something different then what you initially agreed on waiting for you at the dock.

Also, if it is a cruise you are going on make sure that there is a complete understanding as to exactly where it is you are going and how long it will take. There is nothing like a day cruise on a peaceful day and more and more couples are choosing to have their weddings and receptions on charter boats. There is just something about being on the water that really ads to the festive atmosphere of any celebration so if you are going to be visiting London then consider a cruise on the Thames as part of your itinerary.

Energy Saving Tips – Free of Charge

Cutting your energy bills is a great way to save some money, particularly in the winter months. But it doesn’t mean that you’ll have to spend the whole winter shivering because you’ve turned your heat so low.

It is easy to cut way back on your utility bills. All it takes is some willingness to make a few changes in your daily habits and the results can be more than you would have imagined.

Here are some easy to follow energy saving tips:

1. The first thing you will need to do is make sure you aren’t wasting money on energy costs by making your furnace work harder than it needs to. How do you do that? Easy, make sure it’s running properly. Have your furnace inspected by a professional. It is also important to keep the filters clean. Most experts recommend you replace your filters monthly during the winter months.

2. Now that you’ve got your furnace humming along it’s important to make sure all that nice warm air you’ve paid to heat doesn’t escape out of your house.

Make sure your home has the proper level of insulation. Insulation is measured in ‘R’ values. If you’re not sure what you should have just ask someone at your local home improvement store.

If you don’t have enough insulation add more. Other places your house can ‘leak’ are around, and through, windows and doors. Make sure all your windows and doors are properly caulked and weather stripped.

3. Make your own energy. It’s easier than ever before to use solar and wind power to generate electricity for your home.

You can easily, and inexpensively, build and install your own turbines and solar panels. And don’t worry, turbines are much smaller and can even be installed right on your roof.

Is Wind Energy Just a Bunch of Hot Air?

If wind energy is such as great way to save money why aren’t more people, and companies, doing it? That is a question that gets asked a lot, and it’s a good one. In this article I’m going to point out some of the pros and cons of using the wind to generate electricity. Hopefully this information will make it easier for you to decide if it’s right for you.

In its simplest terms wind power is captured by a wind turbine which than turns that energy into electricity. That electricity can be used right away or saved to be used at a later date by being stored in batteries. Many people and businesses are beginning to see the real advantage to this kind of energy: it’s free, readily available, doesn’t pollute, and renewable. If you look, you will see more small turbines popping up in your neighbor’s backyards and on the roofs of local businesses.

The initial expense to purchase a turbine might be out of reach for some, they can run from between $600- $12,000. But you can also build your own for just a couple hundred dollars.

You may even be eligible for a tax credit if you install one at your home. And don’t worry, they are quite small and there are styles that can be mounted right on your roof.

The downside of using the wind for electricity is that while the technology for converting the energy of the wind into electricity has improved dramatically it still has a long way to go to be truly efficient. It will also take more than one turbine to create all the electricity the average house will use in a day.

I hope that I’ve given you a little information to make up your mind as to whether or not using wind energy for your home or business is the right way for you to go. It’s certainly something you might want to look into a little more. Saving money and saving the planet are worth a little bit of research.

Buying a Generator – Tips You Need to Know

There are questions you need to ask before you buy a generator. How do I know what size to buy? How do I know if I buy one too big? Or if I buy one too small? There are questions that need to be answered before you purchase a generator.

Some factors you need to consider are as follows:

Size of generator to fit the load Time of Use Gas availability

Natural gas has the best advantage for a generator. If you don’t have natural gas, you can pursue propane. This propane tank can be buried in the ground so it is out of your visual site. You can get up to 1000 gallon tank that could last up to two weeks depending upon the size of the generator and usage.

Most power outages occur between five to seven days. Hurricane Katrina was an exception. Most people were out of power for at least one month, most longer. Keep that in mind before purchasing a generator.

If you purchase a generator too small, you won’t be able to run your central air conditioning. If you purchase one too big, you will be burning excess fuel for no reason. You may be over sizing yourself. Your fuel consumption will be higher than it needs to be.

A customer called last week to get a quote on a large generator he thought he needed. I gave him what he asked for but I suggested that I come out to his home to see exactly what his needs were. He may not need that large a generator for his house. Remember a larger generator will burn too much fuel and cost you money.

Before purchasing a generator, I suggest you consult and expert. This expert should be someone trained in the area to give you the most efficient generator you can possibly get. Your electrician will take load calculations on your house. Sizing is important. Don’t size yourself. Leave that to the experts! They may save you money.

And now I invite you to join me in learning energy saving tips you can do yourself to decrease your electric bill at http://www.energyconsciousconsultant.com
